Snow Monkey & Winter Nagano Photography Tour with Marco Ronconi
  • Nagano , Japan

Tour Concept

This tour is ideal for travelers who wish to experience the beauty of winter photography in Japan. It is especially recommended for those interested in capturing a diverse range of subjects, from nature and wildlife to traditional culture.
Over the course of six days, this photography tour takes you through wintertime Nagano, offering far more than the world‑famous snow monkeys. You will explore the historic Zenkoji Temple, stroll through the charming town of Obuse—renowned for its traditional atmosphere and its connection to ukiyo‑e master Katsushika Hokusai—and photograph the beautifully preserved post towns along the old Nakasendo Trail, where the spirit of medieval Japan still lingers.
You will also enjoy exceptional opportunities to capture iconic mountain landscapes, including Mt. Fuji and the Japanese Alps, where the crisp winter air and clear light provide ideal conditions for striking photographic expression.

Highlights

Snow Monkeys

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park offers an unforgettable opportunity to capture Japan’s famous wild macaques in their most iconic winter setting. As steam rises from the natural hot springs and snow blankets the valley, the monkeys’ expressive faces and relaxed behavior create endlessly compelling subjects for photographers of all levels. Throughout the day, you can observe intimate social interactions, playful young monkeys, and the serene sight of adults soaking in the warm baths. The park’s dramatic winter landscape adds depth and atmosphere to every shot, making this experience not only a wildlife encounter but also a chance to create striking, emotionally rich images that reflect the quiet beauty of Japan’s winter.

Winter Landscape of Nagano

Amid the stillness and crisp clarity of the highlands in midwinter, you will photograph sweeping views of Mt. Fuji and the Japan Alps. Shooting at both dusk and dawn reveals the landscape at its most enchanting. When conditions allow, we will also pursue the delicate beauty of hoarfrost, rime ice, diamond dust, and sun pillars.

Capturing Japan in the winter scenery

A winter photography tour in Nagano reveals Japan at its quietest and most refined. Snow‑covered Zenkoji Temple, the warm glow of Obuse’s winter streets, and the striking contrast of Matsumoto Castle against the Northern Alps each offer scenes unique to the season. In Narai-juku, the preserved post town takes on a timeless beauty as snow settles on wooden facades and lantern‑lit streets. Deeper in the mountains, the snow‑laden approach to Togakushi Shrine evokes a profound sense of mystery and spirituality. United by the soft winter light, these landscapes highlight the essence of “Japan‑ness,” giving photographers a rare chance to capture beauty in its purest form.
