Northern Japan Autumn Photography Tour with Marco Ronconi
  • Aomori, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi

Tour Concept

This tour is designed to capture the beauty of Japan’s autumn landscapes along with its rich history and culture. The journey takes place in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, visiting four prefectures: Aomori, Iwate, Yamagata, and Miyagi. Because of the northern latitude, autumn arrives earlier here, and the schedule is set to coincide with the peak foliage season in late October.

In the first part of the trip, you will focus on Aomori Prefecture, photographing the magnificent autumn scenery of Lake Towada, the Oirase Gorge, and Mt. Hakkoda. Midway through the journey, you will visit Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where temples such as Chūson-ji and Mōtsū-ji convey the historical atmosphere of the medieval era. In the latter part, the tour moves into Yamagata Prefecture, exploring Mt. Haguro and Mt. Yudono of the sacred Dewa Sanzan, as well as Risshaku-ji Temple, widely known as “Yamadera,” where nature and religion merge into a unique spiritual landscape.

Throughout the tour, you will photograph the stunning autumn scenery of Tohoku and the cultural and historical heritage that has been preserved in harmony with nature, making this a truly fulfilling photography experience

Highlights

Capturing Autumn Splendor in Aomori prefecture

In late October, Aomori reaches the peak of its autumn colors. The surface of Lake Towada shines with a clear blue, reflecting the surrounding mountains ablaze in shades of crimson and gold like a perfect mirror. Along the Oirase Gorge, trees lining the crystal stream turn vivid hues, while the murmur of water and the gentle fall of leaves envelop visitors in a dreamlike atmosphere. Moss-covered rocks and the whiteness of cascading waterfalls highlight the brilliance of the foliage, revealing new scenery with every step. On Mount Hakkōda, vast slopes are draped in brocade-like colors, where the crisp air carries the grandeur of nature itself. Lake, gorge, and mountain—each offers a unique expression of autumn, leaving travelers with unforgettable memories of Aomori’s autumn splendor.

Sacred and Timeless Hiraizumi in Iwate prefecture

Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture is an ancient town that preserves the grandeur of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan, with a cultural landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chūson-ji Temple, centered on the National Treasure “Konjikidō” (Golden Hall), is surrounded by towering cedar trees, guiding visitors into a solemn world. The Golden Hall embodies the Pure Land Buddhist ideals of the late Heian period, its radiant interior continuing to captivate hearts for over a millennium. Nearby Mōtsū-ji Temple features a Pure Land garden designated as a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty, where the expansive view centered on Ōizumi Pond expresses the Buddhist vision of paradise. In autumn, the temple grounds glow with vivid colors, offering a profound harmony of history and nature. The temple complex of Hiraizumi, safeguarded as both National Treasures and World Heritage, endures as a cultural legacy of prayer and beauty, leaving a lasting impression on all who visit.

Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa), the mountains where God dwells

Since ancient times, it has been believed in Japan that “gods dwell in mountains,” and practitioners of Shugendō have devoted themselves to prayer and ascetic training in these sacred places. The most symbolic of them are the Three Mountains of Dewa—Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono. Together they represent the present, the past, and the future, and the pilgrimage across them has long been regarded as a “journey of rebirth.” In autumn, Mount Haguro’s stone stairway is shaded by towering cedars, with shafts of crimson foliage filtering through as worshippers walk in the footsteps of ascetics. At Mount Yudono, mysterious rocks and sacred springs serve as objects of devotion, welcoming people who pray for reincarnation and renewal. Through the lens of a camera, the spirit of Shugendō and the beauty of autumn leaves merge, capturing fleeting moments where prayer and nature intertwine. The autumn of the Dewa Sanzan offers a rare experience in which faith, scenery, and the joy of photography come together in harmony.
