Nakasendo Route and Kiso Valley
The Nakasendo is one of five great historic highways built over 400 years ago to connect Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Its most beautifully preserved stretch lies in the Kiso Valley, where atmospheric post towns still echo the spirit of Japan’s past.
On this tour, you will explore the towns of Narai-juku, Tsumago-juku, and Magome-juku, where traditional wooden buildings and stone-paved streets evoke the charm of bygone eras. You will also enjoy two memorable hikes: one from Narai-juku to Yabuhara, and another from Tsumago-juku to Magome-juku. These sections of the Nakasendo trail retain the timeless atmosphere of centuries past, inviting you to walk in the footsteps of Edo-period travelers.
With every step along this storied route, you will experience the living history of Japan—an unforgettable journey through landscapes and traditions that have endured for generations.

Experience the ancient capital of Japan on foot with a scenic Kyoto Trail hiking adventure
The Kyoto Trail stretches approximately 83.3 kilometers in total, beginning in Fushimi-Momoyama in the southeast of the city and winding through Mount Hiei, Ōhara, and Kurama, before reaching Takao and Arashiyama. For this tour, we've selected two of the most scenic and culturally significant sections. Along the way, hikers can stop at numerous cultural treasures and historic landmarks, including UNESCO World Heritage sites—a uniquely Kyoto experience. From the summits reached on foot, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the city from various angles, revealing a different, more intimate side of Kyoto.
