Tour Concept
This photography tour takes you deep into Hokkaido’s hidden wilderness, exploring two of its most extraordinary and lesser-known destinations: Teuri Island, a remote seabird sanctuary in the Sea of Japan, and Mt. Daisetsuzan National Park, often called the “Roof of Hokkaido,” located in the mountainous heart of the island. You’ll also explore the famous rolling green landscapes of Biei, celebrated for their tranquil beauty and painterly charm.
Accompanied throughout by seasoned photography guide Paul Whitton, this tour is designed for those with a passion for rare birds, wildlife, and dramatic landscapes.
On Teuri Island, over a million seabirds gather to breed, offering extraordinary encounters with species such as the Spectacled Guillemot, Rhinoceros Auklet, and Common Murre. The island’s rugged terrain and isolation create a striking backdrop for bird photography and observation—an ideal destination for birders and nature photographers alike.
No prior photography experience is required. This tour is perfect for anyone with a passion for nature and an interest in photography—whether you're just starting out or simply enjoy capturing the beauty around you.

I had no idea what to expect when asked to do a familiarization trip to the island of Teuri this past summer. My experience and expectations were far far exceeded, as I gazed astonished over picture perfect views of the famous crystal blue waters, safety from jagged high sea cliffs. Then, soon after, marveled at the close encounters I had with the incredibly rare and beautiful seabirds, most related to puffins birds! I instantly got to work collaboratively working on building a 2026 tour to this absolutely amazing birding destination both scenic, and rich in intimate rare bird photography opportunities. I am teeming with excitement to be leading a tour in conjunction with Saiyu Travel, and to share the experiences I had with you. The trip, also perfectly paired with a visit to the incredible landscapes of the Daisetsuzan mountain range of central Hokkaido, where rare Japanese pikas, and all kinds of both local and migratory birds await your discovery. I have no doubt you will be amazed and enthralled at the unique birding and wildlife opportunities here as well as the sheer beauty of the all the places we will visit on this tour. Highlights
Teuri Island – Seabird Breeding Sanctuary
Teuri Island is a remote offshore island located 27 km (17 miles) from Haboro Town in Hokkaido. From March to July, more than one million seabirds—representing eight different species—gather along the island’s dramatic western coastline to breed. It’s no exaggeration to say that Teuri is one of the world’s most accessible places to observe Spectacled Guillemots and Rhinoceros Auklets in their natural breeding habitat. Visitors can witness the elegant courtship displays of paired guillemots, watch devoted parents return at sunset with fish for their chicks, and feel the excitement as the young birds eagerly feed—rare and intimate moments that can only be experienced during the summer breeding season.

Morning Boat Cruise on Teuri Island with Nature Photographer Takaki Terasawa
The most captivating experience of this tour is the early morning boat cruise, personally captained by Takaki Terasawa, a nature photographer who resides on the island. Aboard a small boat, you’ll glide along dramatic cliffs, getting up close to rare seabirds such as the Spectacled Guillemot, Common Murre, and Pelagic Cormorant, as well as marine wildlife like the Spotted Seal.
One of the most enchanting moments may come during the observation of Spectacled Guillemots—watch as they dash across the water’s surface to take flight, or capture their endearing behavior as they call to one another among the rocky outcrops.
Due to the small size of the boat, departures are subject to sea conditions. To maximize your chances of experiencing this special encounter, the tour includes up to three opportunities to join the cruise during your stay.

Biei and Mount Daisetsuzan National Park
The second part of our tour, we will stay in Asahikawa for 3 nights, enjoying both landscape and wildlife photography. Biei is a picturesque small town surrounded by gentle rolling hills and vast fields. The almost 360° panoramic views from Mt Tokachi present a series of stunning landscapes that make everyone reach for there cameras. Beautiful patchwork-like landscapes, and steaming volcanic craters will leave you in Awe. Another incredibly beautiful spot is Biei is the Shirogane Blue Pond. The mystical blue color of the pond combined with uniformly erect dead trees creates fascinating artistic scenery.
In Mount Daisetsuzan National Park, we will be on the lookout for a super cute little animal, The Japanese Pika also known as the Northern Pika. In Japan, this interesting little creature can only be found in limited pockets of the Mount Daisetsuzan mountains range. Their habitat, very rocky mountain slopes which they use to avoid attacks from raptors, foxes and other natural predators and as a place to safely raise their babies.
