Shiretoko Nature and Wildlife

Seasonal visits of Shearwaters,Orca (Killer) Whales, Sperm whales and Black-footed albatross. Flocks of short-tailed shearwaters that migrate from the Southern Hemisphere's Tasmania. At times, over a thousand birds will descend; resting after their long migration. Orca - Killer Whale start arriving in the Strait from late April and stay until mid July. Multiple pods have been confirmed in the area. After Killer whale season, Sperm whales and Black-footed albatross are often seen from mid July to mid September.

Optional tour : Blackston's Fish-Owls observation

Visit "Fish Owl Observatory" where you can see the Blakiston's Fish Owl in Rausu. This owl is one of the largest owl in the world. this location is famous as the place to observe and photograph endangered Blakiston's Fish Owls' natural behavior at night.

Itinerary

  Summary
1 Meet with your driver at Memanbetsu airport at 13:30pm or Nakashibetsu airport at 14:30 and transfer to our Guest House in Rausu. Enjoy western style local seafood dinner at guest house.
Rausu: Overnight at Shiretoko Serai | Meal: Dinner
2 After breakfast, walk to the port and enjoy two and a half hours wildlife viewing boat cruise in Nemuro strait. Chance to observe Killer whales and Minke whales from May to early July, Sperm whales from July to September. Dall's Porpoise are also often seen whole summer. Bird watchers will enjoy sea birds like Short-tailed Shearwater(May and June), Black-footed albatross (July and August) . In the afternoon, visit Notsuke Peninsula by private vehicle. You will have opportunity to observe Yezo Shika deers, red foxes. June and July is the season that a lot of colorful wildflowers are blooming. Come back to the hotel by 17:00.

Rausu: Overnight at Shiretoko Serai | Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
3 In the morning, another chance of wildlife viewing boat cruise in Nemuro strait. In the afternoon, visit Shiretoko pass, Shiretoko Goko Lakes by private vehicle. Enjoy the rich nature of Shiretoko peninsula. You may encounter brown bears while driving especially around Shiretoko pass. Back to hotel by 17:00

Clothes

Temperature tends to get low even in summer in case of bad weather. Please prepare sweater or fleece, waterproof clothes that can serve as a windbreaker would be recommended. You feel colder than the actual temperature on the boat.

Luggage

As we use private van, and luggage space is limited, we allow everyone to bring up to one suitcase per person.

** Please note that sightings of the wildlife mentioned in the itinerary is not guaranteed.
** In case of bad weather/sea conditions, boat tours may be cancelled and we refund the boat cruise fee in cash (JPY8,800 per cruise/per person ) at Guest House. If this happens, you will have free time in the morning, but it is possible to arrange private car (extra cost JPY8,000-JPY9,000 per/car per/hour)
