Highlights

Naoshima, the art island in the Seto Inland Sea

Naoshima is a small island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, internationally renowned for its contemporary art museums, outdoor installations, and architecture by Tadao Ando. Once a quiet fishing and smelting town, it has transformed into a cultural destination featuring works by artists like Yayoi Kusama, Claude Monet, and James Turrell. Visitors can explore art seamlessly integrated into the island’s natural landscape, making Naoshima a unique blend of creativity and tranquility.

Cultural Journey in Kagawa: Castles, Tranquil Japanese Gardens, and the Revered Kotohira Shrine

Nestled along the tranquil coastline of the Seto Inland Sea, Kagawa Prefecture is a place where Japan’s rich history and cultural heritage continue to flourish. Takamatsu Castle, with its rare seaside structure and elegant stone walls, offers a glimpse into the architectural traditions of the Edo period. As you stroll through its ruins, the scent of the sea evokes quiet memories of the samurai era.
Ritsurin Garden, one of Shikoku’s most celebrated Japanese gardens, presents a delicate tapestry of seasonal beauty. Its traditional pond-centered design harmonizes nature and human artistry, offering visitors a serene and contemplative escape.
And then there is Kotohira Shrine—affectionately known as “Konpira-san.” Revered as a guardian of seafarers, this sacred site has long drawn pilgrims seeking protection and peace. After ascending its long stone stairway, travelers are rewarded with a majestic sanctuary that leaves a lasting impression on the heart.

Hidden Beauty of the Iya Valley in Tokushima

The Iya Valley, famous for its Kazurabashi vine bridge, is a remote region nestled deep in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery and traditional way of life, it has been selected as one of Japan’s three most secluded places. This precious area offers a rare glimpse into the harmonious coexistence of people and nature. As the village is tucked away in lush forests, it is difficult to access without a car or other private transportation. Here, you can fully immerse yourself in the timeless charm of Shikoku’s hidden valley.
